Oragnizers in Vancouver have a budget of about $2 billion Canadien, in part to develop new "legacy" facilties for the event, such as a an additional hockey facility, a Nordic center and athlete housing at Whistler, a bobsled/luge track and a speedskating oval and ice sheet in Downtown Vancouver. About $600 million will be spent to widen and otherwise improve the cliff-hanging, 60-mile stretch of Highway 99 that takes skiers from Vancouver to Whistler.
All ice events – figure skating, hockey and curling – will be held in Vancouver. Freestyle skiing and snowboarding will be held at nearby Cypress Bowl. Luge and bobsled and all Nordic ski events will be held at or near Whistler's Blackcomb Mountain, which will see upward of $150 million in new development. All venues are scheduled to be completed by 2008.
