The commission made a preliminary recommendation recently to designate the 1.1-million-sf building, which cost less than $6 million to build, a Chicago landmark. The proposal will get further review from the department of planning and development and consent of the current owners will be sought.
In addition to the exterior of the building, the commission believes the main lobby on the ground floor as well as exhibition hall, executive offices and library on the eighth floor ought to be preserved.
