The council approved an environmental impact report for the project in 1991, but the development went on hold after the original developer dropped out and the project was taken over by the Agua Caliente Development Authority of the Agua Caliente Indian tribe. The project site is south of Murray Canyon Drive, north of Acanto Drive, west of the Palm Canyon wash and east of the San Jacinto Mountains.
The city's planning commission has recommended that the council re-certify the report, a step that is required for some modifications to the original plans. No development schedule has been announced for the project, which would include an 18-hole golf course called Canyon South, along with the 400-room Indian Canyons Resort Hotel & Spa and 900 housing units.
