Development space is at a premium in the District, but there is ample room for the DOT's new headquarters at the 55-acre Southeast Federal Center along the Anacostia River. The complex will occupy two city blocks on 11 acres at the campus. Designed by acclaimed architect Michael Graves of Princeton, NJ-headquartered Michael Graves & Associates, the DOT headquarters will feature a nine-story tower and an eight-story tower, which will sport a visual continuity to each other via their centrally placed atriums. The property will also feature an underground parking structure with the capacity to accommodate about 1,000 vehicles.
"This project represents a consolidation of several DOT office locations, as well as a replacement for the current headquarters building, the Nassif building, at the corner of 7th and D streets," GSA spokesman Michael McGill explains in a conversation with GlobeSt.com. "This will the first new cabinet-level headquarters building developed by GSA in 25 years." The project is due to reach completion mid-year 2006, at which point JBG/SEFC will lease the facility back to the GSA.
