It will be a two-story structure, located on 70 acres in the Eastwick section of south Philly, specifically on Lindbergh Boulevard, between Suffolk Avenue and 72nd Street.
It will replace an existing processing and distribution center on about 30 acres across from Amtrak's 30th Street Station. That facility was built in 1935. At that time, it processed 1.6 million pieces of mail a day, compared to an average of 7.4 million pieces a day today.
According to published reports, the University of Pennsylvania expects to buy the existing facility for an estimated $50 million in order to expand its campus. Working with Drexel University and the Schuylkill River Development Corp., Penn is developing a plan that would make University City and Center City more mutually accessible for pedestrians as well as vehicular traffic.
