The brownfield site has been identified by the government as one of five strategic areas capable of supporting new settlement in the Thames Gateway.

Landowners-development, English Partnerships, the London Development Agency and landowner Bellway Homes partners, believe the site can accomodate 11,000 new homes. With this in mind they have commissioned the drawing up of a development framework and an outline planning application is expected to be submitted in Spring 2004.

Barking Reach is the second major site near London where the London Development Agency has appointed masterplanners. Last week it emerged that the agency had selected EDAW to provide a development framework for the lower Lea Vally in east London, a key site in London's Olympic bid.
