The eager land preservationists are not out of the woods just yet. They have until Oct. 31 to come up with the entire purchase amount for the 270-year-old "village."

"Protecting such irreplaceable historic sites is much more difficult once the development process is underway," says TPL's Debi Osborne. "Our experience in Virginia and across the country demonstrates strong public support for providing public and private dollars to protect the special places in our communities."

TPL's planned purchase will prove quite a feat. According to the US Census Bureau's statistics for 2002, Loudoun County is the second fastest-growing county in the nation, so developable land will become increasingly scarce.
