"This is a significant step in the history of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project," says Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew J. Amorello. "We will be working closely with the city of Boston and the North End community to ensure the best development proposal is selected."

The 40,000-sf parcel is situated between New Chardon, New Sudbury, Cross and North Washington streets and lies at the nexus of the North End, Government Center and the Bulfinch Triangle. It is the first developable parcel along the Greenway to go out to bid. The Authority says that twelve other parcels along the 1.7-mile corridor are also slated for development. The remainder of the land, which makes up the bulk of the 27 acres that will be created when the old Central Artery is torn down as part of the Big Dig project, will be left as open space, creating a series of parks that extend from North Station to Chinatown.

The Turnpike Authority notes that it is seeking to identify a developer prior to completion of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project.
