Forest City is developing 4,700-acres, or 7.5 miles, at the former international airport. It is the largest urban infill site in the country. Plans call for 12,000 homes and apartments, three million sf of regional and town center retail space and 10 million sf of office, research and industrial space. A total of 1,000 acres will be designated as parks and open space.
The value of Stapleton's total development could exceed $5 billion. Eventually, 30,000 residents and 35,000 workers are expected to call Stapleton home.
A jury of leading industry political and business leaders judged businesses, organizations, events and projects for their contributions to the 300 square miles surrounding the Denver International Airport.
Also lauded were the Quebec Regional Retail Center at Stapleton and the Stapleton Business Center. They were recognized for their overall contribution to the growth and economic development in the DIA District, projected to be one of the fastest growing areas in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Quebec Square, one of the largest retail centers in the city, is at the corner of Quebec Street and Smith Road and brings over 40 retailers to the DIA District. Anchored by Home Depot, Office Depot, Wal-Mart Supercenter and Sam's Club, the 740,000 sf center includes other national and regional stores and restaurants, bringing a number of jobs and retailers to the area. Designed to connect to its adjacent neighborhoods, Quebec Square serve both the residents of the surrounding existing neighborhoods and the new Stapleton residents and workers.
Stapleton Business Center, developed by Catellus Development Corp. and located at the northwest corner of Interstate 70 and Havana Street, is a 295-acre business park that will feature 3.6 million sf of mixed-use office, industrial, distribution, retail and hotel facilities. Eight buildings are already completed with 171,300 sf currently under construction.
Major tenants include Ford Motor Co., Whirlpool Corp. Keebler Co. Marriott Distribution, Dreyers Grand Ice Cream, North American Van Lines and Aspen Pet Products.
