The sporting goods retailer signed a 20-year lease for 1701 S. Cherry Lane, which is under construction for multi-tenant use by owner Steve Graham of the California-based Steve Graham Co., according to Greg Rabin of the Woodmont Co. in Fort Worth.
Graham did not return telephone calls by publication time for details about the redevelopment. The Academy chain, headquartered in Katy, TX, will open the store in November.
Built in 1987 on 12 acres, the big box sits in a pocket of suburban retail, which is collecting $8 per to $13 per sf. Rabin tells GlobeSt.com that Graham approached Woodmont to help find a national name to fill space emptied in the first quarter. Rabin says Academy "worked the numbers" and made the move to claim part of the building in deal making that went start to finish in three months.
