The plan was recommended for approval this week by the city's community development commission. Department of planning and development commissioner Alicia Berg first revealed the plan at RealShare Chicago in June, adding another site at 16th and State streets will likely follow.
The city hopes to acquire the remainder of the site, which includes a four-story single-room-occupancy building that will be demolished, by the end of the year, according to the department of planning and development. The property also includes two parking lots.
"High-quality" first-floor retail space with multifamily units above are envisioned for the southeast corner of 9th and State streets, in a Near South neighborhood that is shifting from commercial and industrial to residential and educational uses. The site is two blocks north of where the $96-million State Place mixed-use project, which replaces the former Chicago Police Department headquarters, is being built by Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund, Mesirow Stein Real Estate, Inc., Near North Properties, Inc., and Northern Realty Group, Ltd.
