The donor proposed the money to start a drive to build a Gophers-only football stadium across from Mariucci Arena, the Star Tribune reported Thursday, citing two unidentified people with knowledge of the discussions between the donor and the university.

The stadium would likely seat between 45,000 and 55,000 people and cost between $180 and $220 million. University of Minnesota officials say that any stadium would have to be largely financed by private donors. The university also has spoken with several construction companies about working together on the project and donating the cost of labor and materials, which could result in close to $50 million toward the stadium's cost, the Star Tribune reported.

The Gophers have played at the Metrodome, along with the Minnesota Twins professional baseball team and Minnesota Vikings professional football team for about 21 years. All three want new stadiums. Last year, the Minnesota Vikings rejected a proposal for a shared stadium on the Gophers campus. The final cost will be determined by the cost of the site, infrastructure costs and the costs of the stadium itself.
