09/03/03: There is some cautiously optimistic news from the labor front in that the amount of jobs being lost is slowing down. This is a welcome sign, especially if you're currently employed. While the official unemployment rate still stands at 6.2%, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve's recent survey of 30 economists shows that this rate will average 5.9% in 2004; with an optimistic view of 5.5% by Election Day. This definitely shows movement in the right direction. One important factor that remains questionable in job-growth creation is the hiring by small businesses, which have traditionally led the way out of recessions. A recent study by the National Federation of Independent Businesses of 1,160 small businesses indicates that only 15% believe they will be hiring. This is the smallest percentage since 1993. What is important now is to find ways to foster new small-business growth and start this engine humming again.
