"This headquarters will revitalize and transform Suitland Federal Center," GSA assistant regional administrator Anthony E. Costa says. "It will relocate Census from several buildings that have lasted beyond their useful life, into a beautiful workspace filled with natural light." The organization is currently spread out among various structures on the Suitland campus, as well as other leased spaces in buildings in the surrounding area.
The Census Bureau's new home will consist of two intersecting structures featuring expansive office space, as well as two parking facilities to accommodate 3,100 vehicles. Phase I will consist of developing 771,000 sf of the office space, and one parking garage with 1,600 spaces. The second and final phase will involve construction of the remaining 730,000 sf of office space and 1,500-space garage. "Funding for Phase II is part of the 2004 Federal Budget process," GSA spokesman Michael McGill explains to GlobeSt.com. "So it is not finished yet but it is in the president's budget." The entire project is on target to wrap up in 2007, providing bureau employees ample time to settle in before the 2010 Census.
