"This project is a major key to growth in the northwest Phoenix area," Bo Calbert, president of McCarthy Building Cos. Southwest Division, tells GlobeSt.com. "By getting ahead of expected growth, the city can ensure that necessary infrastructure is in place to manage water needs and usage before existing services are overwhelmed."

McCarthy will build the $336-million facility as part of a joint venture with Black & Veatch, a global engineering firm specializing in infrastructure development. Vern Swabach of Swabach Partners, a former apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright, will lead the architectural concept design team in creating a facility that will incorporate the extensive use of indigenous materials to link the project to nature, Calbert says, noting that once completed, the project will be the largest design-build water treatment plant in North America.

Currently in the design phase, which is scheduled to last about a year, the project will incorporate the latest in modern water treatment technology and automation into its design. The contract also includes a raw water intake and pump station, 1.5 miles of large-diameter pipeline and on-site storage and pumping of finished water. The project, which will be paid for by the city though a bonding issue, will be operated by American Water Services.
