The Tudor revival-style mansion built by Matilda Dodge Wilson--who founded Oakland University-–is used for a variety of functions, but at age 75 is beginning to show signs of wear.
The university says the 800,000-sf building needs at least $5 million in upgrades just to stay standing into the future. Another $7 million would be needed to upgrade it to a point where it could be rented out for enough weddings, private gatherings and corporate events that the building would be self-sufficient. While the Hall hosts a few events a year, it is primarily a museum now. University officials say maintaining the historical integrity of the building is part of the reason the cost of the renovations will be so high.
Among the reservations planned is the addition of air conditioning and a modernization of the building's electrical and plumbing systems.
