Kevin Weinfeld, chairman of the committee, tells GlobeSt.com that the plan proposed by the team assembled by developer Michael Intoccia, is based on the re-use plan the former Re-Use Planning Committee developed. The plan involves over 200 residential units which will include single family, senior housing and assisted living condominiums as well as more than 50,000-sf of commercial and retail space.

The state closed the hospital in the 1970s and Weinfeld says a number of committees were formed over the years to come up with a plan for the site. This most recent group was formed nearly ten years ago and has been working with the state to implement a plan. Weinfeld notes that the development group will purchase the site from the state. He adds that the group is required to restore, rather than raze, some of the buildings on the property.

The state has already donated 50 acres from the site to the town to be used for recreational space.
