"It was a win-win situation," Kempfert, a broker with CB Richard Ellis for more than 20 years, tells GlobeSt.com. "I was tempted by the challenge, but the other thing that was compelling was that I always wanted to go to Australia, dive the Great Barrier Reef and see the country. I thought I would give it a shot so I did it."

Kempfert, who finished his first marathon in four hours and 10 minutes to place among the top 10% of the 11,000 runners, says he trained about six months to complete the task, running distances up to 21 miles in preparation. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done physically," says the 44-year-old broker, who fulfilled his other dream of diving the Great Barrier Reef during his Australian trip.
