Compared to the current Downtown "Y" at 33 Library St. NE or the West Side YMCA, 902 Leonard St. NW, the new facility will have about three times more recreational space.

Located just west of US 131, it's going to be a lot more visible. Its glass walls will show off the pools and fitness facilities to passers-by on the freeway and Lake Michigan Drive NW. The fourth-floor running track will feature windows overlooking the city. A high-tech multi-story water slide--complete with flashing lights--will wind through a glass wall that will separate the two pools.

Boosted by a $5-million gift from the family of Steelcase Inc. pioneer David Hunting, the YMCA has achieved about 60% of its $15-million philanthropy goal. The YMCA intends to borrow the remainder. The agency is looking to sell its two existing facilities in Michigan's second largest city.
