The project also entails reconstructing the roadway portion of the causeway islands as well as replacing the toll centers at the Sanibel and Cape Coral bridges. In all, it is a $60-million project.

Bridge conditions are deteriorating, so the schedule for the project is being accelerated. The project began in October, and it is expected to be completed in early 2006.

The Sanibel Causeway crosses San Carlos Bay and opened in 1963. The causeway has one bascule bridge and two low-level bridges, in addition to two causeway islands. The three bridges have had structural deterioration and need emergency repairs. Jacobs will manage the project's construction and commissioning phases, and keep the existing bridges fully functional during the work.

Lee County includes Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs. The county government spends more than $700 million a year on county services and programs.
