Details of the deal are still being hammered out, but if the city and team can reach an agreement, the Angels could move from their current spring training home at Diablo Stadium in Tempe to a site at Estrella Parkway and Yuma Road in Goodyear by 2005.
Under the new stadium plan, Goodyear would contribute $10 million toward the project with team owner Arte Moreno paying the rest of the $20-million cost.
The move by the Major League franchise could jumpstart a planned commercial corridor in Goodyear that will someday include a new city hall along with office and retail projects, city officials say.
The Angels' decision could deal another major economic blow to Tempe, however, which recently lost both the Arizona Cardinals and the Fiesta Bowl to Glendale. The Angels, which have a lease through 2007 at Diablo Stadium, may sublease that stadium to another major league team, possibly the Chicago White Sox.
