Reportedly, the Staubach Co. based in Dallas had also looked at buying Crested Butte. Terms of the sale, scheduled to close next month, were not disclosed.

"We recognize the potential that exists with Crested Butte and are committed to placing guest service and the overall quality of the recreational experience as our top priority," says Tim Mueller.

The Muellers own Okemo Mountain Resort in Ludlow, VT, and Mount Sunapee Resort in Newbury, NH. Both were on the edge of failing when the Muellers took over, but have been revitalized since then.

Crested Butte, which had 342,416 skier visits last season, has been on the market for months. The Muellers have said upgrading its services and developing real estate could raise its profile among Colorado resorts.

The Muellers in 2002 reached an agreement to buy the Steamboat Resort from American Skiing Co. for about $91 million. American canceled the deal on the day it was to be completed and instead sold its Heavenly Resort in California to Vail Resorts.
