Built by the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, the 4547 W. McDowell Rd. facility will be the homeport for 1,500 to 2,000 apprentice carpenters a year, a fivefold increase from the current 300 apprentices trained in the area each year. The facility will feature 60,000 sf of open space to train apprentices in steel stud framing, drywall installation, scaffolding construction and concrete form development. The remaining space will be dedicated to classrooms for courses in welding, cabinet making, blue print reading, construction safety and other disciplines. Courses in math and language skills also will be offered.
Southwest Council officials said the facility will not only help increase the number of skilled carpenters in the Valley, but will also add to its Arizona membership, which now stands at about 4,000 members.
