The plan laid out by bank officials, who say they will create at least 1,800 new jobs in the process, puts 10 of those branches in New York City, another 10 in Long Island and 20 in Northern New Jersey. The remaining 10 new branches slated for this year are expected to be located in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
For the longer term, bank officials outlined an even more ambitious plan. That plan includes upwards of 700 branches, including more than 400 in Metro New York/New Jersey, by 2009. Based in this South Jersey community in metro Philadelphia, Commerce Bank has been steadily expanding its presence northward from its home market.
