Located on a 15-acre site along Route 18 in this Middlesex County community, the property will consist of a four-story mid-rise building. Maher Manor, which is named for late councilman Jack Maher, will have a total of 91 one-bedroom apartments and nine two-bedroom layouts. On-site amenities will include a library, media lounge, fitness and community rooms, a computer room, a tenant-run store and a card reader security system.
"We began planning this initiative five years ago to help meet the critical need for affordable senior housing in the area," explains MaryAnn Gurliaccio, chairman of the housing and redevelopment agency. "This community will give our seniors the opportunity to enjoy a quality independent living environment at affordable costs."
"The statewide need for affordable housing in New Jersey is well-known," adds Tim Henkel, development officer for Pennrose Properties. "It is important that we recognize the specific need to provide seniors with local housing options."
"This community will positively impact the lives of residents who will now be able to remain near family and friends," says Old Bridge mayor Jim Phillips, who presided over the recent groundbreaking. "It certainly reminds me of Jack [Maher], who was always concerned about what he could do for individuals."
Funding for the construction of Maher Manor is coming, in part, from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, the New Jersey Housing Mortgage Finance Agency and from Middlesex County. The latter put up a total of $380,000 through its Affordable Senior Housing Fund.
The site, as chosen by the housing and redevelopment agency, also has proximity to the expanding Old Bridge Medical Center, as well as to retail venues and public transportation, according to local officials.
