By April 15, the Lowe's team must have the specifics of the project in place. For now, the plan calls for about 100,000 sf of retail space to include a 55,000-sf Safeway as the grocery store anchor, residential offerings of more than 600 condominiums and apartments with one-fifth of the units designated as affordable housing, and parking facilities to accommodate 800 vehicles.
"The retail space wrapping around Safeway along 5th and K streets presents a strong opportunity for the creation of a neighborhood amenity not currently found in the Mount Vernon Triangle area," says RLA Revitalization Corp. Board Chair Karen M. Hardwick. "Affordable housing was also a central part of this proposal, and the team captured the essence of the affordable housing needs of the District by its depth in the affordable housing program."
Lowe beat out proposals from the Roadside Development LLC-led One Market Commons Associates and Mount Vernon Park Partnership, which was spearheaded by John Akridge Cos. Construction on the project is expected to get under way in the spring of next year.
