Phoenix-based Wespac Construction, Inc. took "Contractor of the Year" to mark its third such honor in five years. The firm was selected based on contributions to the office and industrial real estate industry in Arizona along with its community outreach efforts.Also taking honors at the 2003 Best of NAIOP awards dinner, held at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, was First Industrial Realty Trust, which won in the industrial build-to-suit category for the Atronic Americas building in North Scottsdale. The firm's architect, Patrick Hayes, president of Patrick Hayes Architecture Inc. also won as architect of the year.

The CB Richard Ellis Inc.'s team of Jim Fijan, Tom Adelson, Jerry Roberts and Kevin Calihan brought home the "Office Broker of the Year" top honor while Jennifer Bishop, also with CBRE, took the gold for "Deal Maker of the Year." Mike Haenel, with Grubb & Ellis/BRE Commercial, got the nod as the top industrial broker while Trammell Crow Co.'s Mindy Korth and Barry Gabel took the award as 2003's leading investment brokers.

In the development category, Shea Commercial topped the list as small developer of the year with the award for large developer going to the Plaza Cos. The Black Canyon Center, developed by Opus West, won for Office Building of the Year in the 75,000 sf and up category and SunCor's Palm Valley Office Park-Phase II took the same award for an office building less than 75,000 sf. The office build-to-suit award went to Ryan Cos.' Target Financial Services II building. The firm also captured top honors for Chandler Freeways, winning the spec industrial building award in the 100,000 sf and over category. The Hewson Co. got the same award for a building under 100,000 sf.
