As the Vikings did, the last beam will temporarily have a small evergreen tree attached to it. The beam also will have an American flag hanging from it during the ceremony.

The center will have a 584,000-sf ballroom, which the city boasts will be the largest room between Chicago and California, and will open Dec. 6. Voters approved a bond issue to build the city owned facility in November 1999.

The general contractor is Hensel Phelps/Walker/Alvarado. The architect is a joint venture between Fentress Bradburn Architects LTD and its associate architects, Bertam A. Bruton & Associates, Harold Massop Associates and Abo Copeland Architecture Inc.

The Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau already has booked the NBA All-Star Weekend, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Geological Society of America into the expanded convention center, which will have about 2.4 million sf.

The center, along with an attached 1,000-space parking garage, covers a total of nine city blocks, giving it the largest footprint of any structure Downtown.
