Construction of the $175-million hotel is set begin in the final trimester of 2004 and be complete in 2007. The hotel is being designed by RTKL and will fly a Sheraton flag. UBS Financial Services will carry the financing for the project.
Conceived as an "urban resort," the hotel is at the heart of a vast new development district around the Puerto Rico Convention Center, which opens at the end of 2004. According to RTKL designer Jason Cruce, the hotel anchors a mixed-use, urban street setting that will eventually include office and residential units, a House of Blues restaurant and a Caribe cinema.
The hotel itself will include approximately 500 rooms, restaurant space, retail space, a theater, entertainment complex, spa and casino. The 4th floor roof will offer gardens, a pool and cabanas--"a beach without sand," Cruce calls it--to bring the Caribbean into the city for convention-goers. A nearby cruise port will supply further hotel traffic.
Garfield Traub's most recent developments include the Sheraton Overland Park at the Convention Center in Kansas; the Bay City, MI, Doubletree Hotel and Conference Center; and the Columbia, SC Hilton Convention Center Headquarters Hotel. Interlink Group's most recognized developments include Las Casitas Village in El Conquistador, the renovation of the Hotel El Convento in San Juan, and the San Juan Hotel and Casino in Isla Verde.
