Design changes by construction manager James McHugh Construction Co. and access to the site six months before ground breaking are cited as reasons for the early completion and cost savings. Among the adjustments was changes in the design of the foundation of the main structure.

"It's so beyond our expectations there's no word for it," says assistant superintendent for administration Patricia Sumrow.

About half of the 600,000-sf building is in three stories of classrooms. A new library and field house also were included in the project.

The school district recently held a dedication ceremony for the rebuilt school.
