4/7/04: The latest jobs increase -- 308,000 in March -- bodes well for the recovery and perhaps will tone down the invectives of the presidential election. First, to state that the 3 million jobs lost during the past recession is the worst performance since Herbert Hoover is utter nonsense. Even the Clinton years racked up worse numbers than the current 5.7% unemployment rate. Still, there is no reason to pop open the champagne quite yet. The unemployment rate actually increased from 5.6% to 5.7% last month and many of the new jobs reported are a one - time anomaly based on seasonal hiring. So armed with both sides of this story, we might be able to discern a more relevant debate about unemployment and leave the hyperbole to the general media.
