The station is one of 12 being built around the city by the Public Buildings Commission. The current 7th District station house is half the size of the proposed building, as well as 50 years old.
The Public Buildings Commission either owns or is condemning property on both sides of the 1400 block of 63rd Street for the new station, which will serve the Englewood neighborhood. While the police station will be built on the north side of the street, parking for the 450 police officers and employees will be available on the south side of 63rd Street.
The Public Buildings Commission has had condemnation authority for three years.
The block includes vacant lots and storefront buildings. Property records show the Public Buildings Commission already has paid $122,500 for a storefront church.
