5/12/04: There are two big stories in the information - systems world this month. First is Google's IPO, which is being offered in an auction under the guise of making the doling out of shares more democratic. Of course, as experience shows, as high as this stock can go, it certainly can go way down as well. And any individual investor who isn't aware of this may want to rethink the virtues of democracy in the securities market. Of course, the point of the IPO is not just to make investors money but also to invest in infrastructure and expansion, which can only result in more jobs. So it' s a welcome measure. The second story is that MCI is laying off another 7,500 workers this quarter on top of the 5,700 it laid off in the first quarter. MCI's actions are a result of an overheated market and untamed excesses from the late 1990s . Hopefully, this is the last we'll hear of that story. Google and MCI. Two different visions, two different outcomes.
