05/26/04: Perhaps the economy isn't quite as robust as one may think ifone report released this week from the International Conference of Shopping Centers is to be believed. This report cites the success of “Shrek 2” for the dip in retail store sales last week. Not to be contrarian, but when in the history of reporting retail store sales has a cartoon had so much impact on the way people shop? Usually when people go to the movies, especially with their children, they are more likely to shop than not. There are a host of issues that could result in lower sales including higher gas prices and waiting for Memorial Day sales. When it comes down to the reality of the matter, if retailers are vilifying a big green ogre for adisappointing weekend, there must be a lot of underlying insecurity about this recovery. At least from the retailing point of view.
