Although a builder has yet to be named, the firm will meet with the airport's management and begin preliminary work, says Bill Hartman, design director and managing director at Gensler. The airport authority had received nine applications by design firms to work on the project.
Recently, Gensler, which has an office in Detroit, has worked on projects at the growing Bishop International Airport in Flint. Gensler has also assisted Pontiac with planning for the eventual redevelopment of the Pontiac Silverdome. Gensler says it has designed 44 airport terminals of various sizes over the past 20 years.
The proposed 29-gate North Terminal is expected to include about 660,000 sf of space, about 50,000 sf of which will be dedicated to concessions. The terminal will replace the Davey Terminal, which has not been in use at the airport for several years.
