The two-story location will include a 250-seat theater, a 300-seat banquet hall and a 250-seat bar/restaurant. Second City had been operating a highly popular comedy show in Detroit, in the Hockeytown Cafe on Woodward, since 1993. It was part of a growing entertainment district in the city. That venue closed when the lease expired in March.
In a recent interview with GlobeSt.com, an executive with Olympia Entertainment, which owns and manages Hockeytown, said space could become a boutique concert location, though no plans have been expanded.
Andiamo owns a string of eight upscale restaurants around the Detroit area and is planning a new restaurant in Detroit's Renaissance Center. The president of Andiamo, Joe Vicari, is also a principal in the Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Sterling Heights.
Vicari opened the flagship Andiamo Italia in Warren in 1989 and added an adjacent 850-seat banquet and entertainment complex in 1994. The Novi site is scheduled to open early next year.
