The initial phase of the project, which overall will expand several specialty and acute-care facilities and add substantially to on-site parking facilities, involves a new cancer center and a new cardiac catheterization lab that are expected to be completed by later this year, according to hospital officials. The cancer center itself will have a new radiation department with examination rooms, administrative offices and a reception area.
Phase II, meanwhile, will add to the medical center's existing treatment facilities, including a new outpatient center and several private treatment rooms. An early 2005 completion is anticipated.
The project also calls for a major expansion of the facility's emergency department, which has been handling upwards of 90,000 patients a year, according to hospital officials. The expansion will boost its capacity by an estimated one-third, and will include a new entrance and reception area, along with what hospital officials term a "quick care" center, and an environmental services office. The expanded emergency department is expected to be ready a year from now.
Finally, the expansion project will add a new 500-car parking garage that's expected to be finished in 2006. Community Medical Center serves a region covering much of Ocean County in south central New Jersey.
