Home Depot and Target Corp. already have staked out locations to the south of the 19,000-sf Chicago Printed String Co. building. The company used the building to make string imprinted with its customers' names used to tie bakery and candy boxes.
The building was designed by Alfred S. Alschuler, one of the first architects in Chicago to use reinforced concrete for the structural framework. His work includes Goldblatt Brothers department store on Chicago Avenue, also designated a landmark.
