"The new location will allow Children's to develop over 1.2 million sf in its initial stage dedicated to its mission of improving the health of children through the provision of high quality, coordinated programs of patient care, education, research and advocacy," says John Shaw, executive project director for the Children's Hospital and vice president and general manager for Opus Northwest LLC.
Fitzsimons is billed as the largest medical-related redevelopment project in the US. The $4.3-billion project is anchored by a new campus for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the affiliated Colorado Bioscience Park Aurora, where 18 biotechnology companies have set up operations. The workforce at Fitzsimons is projected to reach 5,310 by December 2004 and to exceed 32,000 at completion and be able to accommodate more than 800,000 patients annually.
The Aurora Economic Development Council recently sponsored a breakfast forum on the Children's Hospital relocation in the Uptown neighborhood east of downtown to Fitzsimons.
"The addition of the Children's Hospital's new state-of-the-art facility is a key component to Fitzsimons' continued success," says Wendy Mitchell, president of the Aurora Economic Development Council.
