07/07/04: Now that John Kerry has picked his running mate for the November showdown, perhaps we can have a few days of rest. Of course this is wishful thinking, and we'll be inundated with polls; opinions; pundits; and, of course, commercials "approved by the candidate" ad nauseam. (Maybe that's where the term "ad" came from.) This may be a good time to think about your own transition and choice of a successor. It's not pleasant or pretty to think about, however, it's necessary if you want to ensure the long-term health of your company. Choosing the right successor depends on many factors that include more than just functional capabilities. It also includes the ability to manage the company you've built and the talent to work with the people within that environment. And now, on with the show.
