07/21/04: Several high-level corporate scandals are playing out now—and quite publicly. Martha Stewart of course is headed off for a brief vacation in a government-funded resort not of her choosing while Frank Quattrone was recently denied a retrial by a US district judge. Meanwhile, Kenneth Lay has been indicted on federal charges for a multitude of unsavory dealings. Regardless of guilt or innocence in each case, these seemingly unrelated stories are all linked by the thread of excess. They all tell tales of illicit behavior and the apparent ability of individuals to delude themselves into thinking they’ve done nothing wrong. These are all interesting cases to follow, not only for their celebrity appeal or the high-ticket nature of the news, but also as a morality play. We can all learn from the news swirling around Stewart, Quattrone and Lay. If we do, it's a good thing.
