The center will actually be operated by Somerset Medical Center under a lease agreement with the developer and owner of the facility, the Plano, TX-based Mediplex Medical Building Corp. Medical center officials have said previously that while they would prefer to own the facility, the institution doesn't have the necessary financial resources.
As part of the planning board's approval, however, Somerset Medical Center has agreed to pay the town $9 million for the air rights above the street that separates the cancer care center from the main medical center building. The air rights will be utilized for the construction of an elevated, enclosed walkway connecting the facilities.
Ground is expected to be broken for the new facility in early September, with completion anticipated a year later. The cost of building the center has not been released.
