08/18/04: Does it really pay to have a national event in your hometown?   What benefits did  Boston reap from the Democratic National Convention?  Will New York City benefit from the upcoming Republican  c onvention?  Chances are that only a few will profit while the city as a whole will end up paying the freight.  Yes , the presence of 20,000 visitors to the Big Apple is welcome by a select group of hotels and restaurants. Nevertheless, taxpayers will most likely end up subsidizing the event, and a sizable bill it could be. The overtime pay for the police force and firefighters alone probably won't be covered by the revenues generated, and those revenues will mean even less a s  local workers tak e the week off and  leave mass tra n s portation empty.  Conventions and other big national events generally create a lot of  short-term buzz for the host cities but probably don't  offer much else.  And now a warning for  any meetings and convention bureaus looking to attract  such events : T ake a look at the empty seats at the Olympic events in Greece.  Not a pretty sight.
