The Bridges To Breakwater plan is part of an far-reaching revitalization of the port that envisions a mix of commercial and recreational uses all along the way from the Vincent Thomas Bridge to the federal breakwater. Among these is the revitalization of the Ports O'Call retail and restaurant district, new streets that connect with Harbor Boulevard, a continuous waterfront promenade to provide improved pedestrian circulation at the water's edge, and a host of changes designed to make the waterfront more convenient and accessible, such as coordinating water taxi stops with the Red Car stations. Port officials also expect the plan to capitalize on existing attractions and developments along the waterfront, including the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the Southern Pacific Fishing Slip. No price tag has been set for the series of developments, but port officials are hoping that private developers will be attracted to the area and will fund a portion of the cost of development for the commercial phases of the waterfront project.
