Locally based Progressive Development Services Co. plans to construct the Village at Old Trace at the west Cobb County site. The project would be a mix of low-rise office buildings, restaurants and residential units. Cobb County's 2003 population was 651,027, a 7.1% increase over 2002, according to the US Census Bureau.

Meanwhile, in Spalding County, an area with a permanent population of 60,483, the Griffin-Spalding County Development Authority plans a 189-acre industrial park with foreign trade zone status about 1.2 miles west of Interstate 75 at Wallace and Jackson roads. But the Authority needs a green light from the county's planning commission before it can proceed with the project, planning department staffers confirm for GlobeSt.com.

The commission expects to hear the rezoning request this week and send its recommendation to the city council which will decide the rezoning at a later date. Businesses moving to the park would receive concessions on import and export fees if the federal government approves foreign trade zone status to the venture, county officials says.

Georgia has four industrial parks with foreign trade zones. The Spalding park would be the southernmost foreign trade zone along Interstate 75 in Georgia. Spalding has three industrial park but they are several miles from I-75.
