09/01/04: Has it really come down to this? In addressing the economy's sputtering growth, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger referred to those who are not completely upbeat about the economy's strength as, "Economic girlie men." The latest survey of 5,000 households by the non-partisan Conference Board indicates that the Consumer Confidence Index has unexpectedly dropped after four straight months of growth. This drop is due mainly to concerns about future job growth. Now the governor of California may think that this news-grabbing sound bite is clever, but he may be alarmed to find out that there are still 1.2 million people who lost jobs during the recession and are not rolling hysterically in the aisles.
