09/08/04: Where does the economy stand? At this point, there is an informational overload. There are so many different statistics to pore over that there seems to be no real indicator to go by other than your gut. And no real assistance is forthcoming from the nation's capital. The Fed chairman is testifying in front of Congress to discuss, among other things, the "softness" in this recovery. But if this is indeed a recovery, there shouldn't be anything soft about it. This may be another word created by the beltway spin machine to let us know that, regardless of a growing GDP, we have a long way to go. It's not such a bad thing to give it to us straight and not couch every phrase as if we'd crumble. We've all been here before and have made it through just fine.
