"Sometimes its pays to be last," Ed Friedman, executive vice president-brokerage and advisory services for Newmark, tells GlobeSt.com adding that the firm has learned from both the successes and failures of its predecessors in this marketplace. Friedman says a key to the newest venture is that the newest additions will integrate culturally with Newmark's core values. "They really need to fit in. We operate openly and collegially. We believe revenue can be compounded by personality."

Industrial specialist Jack O'Connor was named director of Newmark's National Industrial Practice Group. Joining him are Brian Lee, Dan Marcus and Scott W. Berfas. Lee has been appointed executive managing director of the firm's Long Island office, while Marcus and Berfas will serve as executive directors.

"Both gentlemen not only embody Newmark's core values, but also bring a unique blend of qualities to the firm that will benefit us greatly as we expand our Long Island practice and our national presence," Friedman says of O'Connor and Lee. "Not only are they well respected, but they are also expert team builders and gifted mentors."

Friedman says the company has had "pockets of excellence" in regional industrial practices, but O'Connor will work to integrate and organize them in the future. Chuck Tabone, managing principal of Newmark's Long Island operation, notes that the staff additions signal the largest expansion of the brokerage firm's presence on the island since it began operations in 2000.

O'Connor has more than than 25 years experience having held executive positions with a number of national commercial brokerage companies. He also owned his own firm Island Realty based here. He was awarded the Broker of the Year award in 2002 by the Association for a Better Long Island and the Commercial Industrial Brokers Society for his part in the disposition of the Enterprise Park at Calverton's 492-acre industrial core, which included more than 800,000 sf of commercial space in 18 buildings.

With 16 years of experience in the commercial office sector, Lee has more than 300 commercial real estate transactions to his credit. Marcus joins the firm with a number of years of national brokerage experience. Berfas has specialized in representation for commercial office tenants on Long Island and the Tri-State area prior to joining Newmark.
