09/22/04: Although the estimates for the US economy have been revised downward, we're still ahead of the pack according to the latest forecast from the Organization for Economic Development. Originally forecasted to grow 4.7% in 2004, the economy is still on course to grow 4.3%. Compared with some of the world's largest economies, we are still ahead of the pack, even though Germany, France and the UK numbers rose. Germany is forecasted to grow 1.7% vs. 1.1%; France 2.7% vs. 2.0%; and Britain 3.4% vs. 3.1%. The main reason for the US downturn, according to OECD economist Jean-Phillipe Cotis, is, "the sub-par pace of job creation recorded to date." So our economy is well-ahead of our partner/competitor nations. The only thing still needed for us to really break out of the gate is a surge in job creation. Based on the resilience of this economy, it may not be far off.
