Deree's real estate career began in 1975 in Florida and Michigan where he completed the first 200-unit townhome-condominium conversion in Kalamazoo near Western Michigan University, his alma mater. He followed that up with the acquisition and conversion of 143 high-end apartment units.
At Smith Equities, Deree already has listed $26 million of institutional properties, says company president Robert E. Smith. "After years in the real estate business, Mike took a break in 1992 to pursue a new career track in plastics manufacturing and distribution," Smith says. Deree began as a national sales manager for a plastics firm in Miami, then formed his own company. He sold the firm later to an Ohio factory that manufactured plastic products under a license agreement with Deree.
